When Feces Hits The Rotating Oscillator

On Sunday a deranged man entered a large warehouse shopping establishment brandished a firearm and began "yelling" with a store full of shoppers.


An off duty police officer was in the store and had his own firearm available. He was able to stop the threat, shooting the assailant before he could go further with his assault plan to harm this holiday shopping crowd.


I knew of someone who had just left the store, and someone who was sidetracked on their way to the store. My friend on the way was delayed and fortunately decided that their delay would have made the shopping excruciatingly more crowded and lengthy.


I was relieved with their good timing, but today it brought me back to one of my main tenets when it comes to physical readiness .


One should be fit, ready, and aware so that when $hit hits the fan it gives them the best odds of escaping or surviving.


This was a case involving an active shooter. If one encounters an active shooter, The Office of Homeland security recommends:

1. RUN

• Have an escape route and plan in mind • Leave your belongings behind • Keep your hands visible

2. HIDE

• Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view • Block entry to your hiding place and lock the doors • Silence your cell phone and/or pager

3. FIGHT

• As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger • Attempt to incapacitate the shooter • Act with physical aggression and throw items at the active shooter


ALL of these recommendations involve a healthy, fit and functional individual. You don't need 12 consecutive muscle ups, a 750 lb deadlift or a sub 2:00 FRAN. I am advocating basic physical proficiency. The Seven primal movement patterns would be a nice place to start. Or, how about an up-down taking one second or bear crawling 50 meters in the event you can't run or you need to scoot to better hiding.


It takes little skill to run (sprint), scoot or slide behind a stack of warehouse inventory. Scrambling in face to face combat is different but I like my odds better if I am fit, mobile, rested and sober.


Please note that daily practice will improve function for most of theses attributes. More skill and practice in self defense technique --all the better. Unfit, and unhealthy could mean last one to the exit. This goes for plane crashes, and natural disasters as well. Healthy and fit ups your odds.


So I ask you one question.


Are you in a place physically that gives you the best odds of survival if feces hits the rotating oscillator ?
